King’s Landing to Dragonstone Distance and Sailing Time Across Blackwater Bay
Ship · Dragon · Blackwater Bay
Dragonstone guards the mouth of Blackwater Bay, a short voyage from King’s Landing. Here is how far apart they are by ship and by dragon, and why the distance shaped both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
Dragonstone is about 200 miles from King’s Landing. A sailing ship crosses Blackwater Bay and the Gullet in about three days, and a dragon covers the distance in roughly three and a half hours. There is no road: Dragonstone is an island.
Distance & Travel Time
The essentials at a glance before the full breakdown.
How far is Dragonstone from King’s Landing?
Dragonstone sits at the mouth of Blackwater Bay, about 206 miles from King’s Landing in a straight line. Ships follow the coast and the narrow waters of the Gullet past Driftmark, so the sailing distance is closer to 270 miles.
That short gap is the whole point of Dragonstone. It is near enough to strike the capital in hours by dragon, yet as an island it cannot be reached by an army on foot.
| Method | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Sailing ship | ≈ 268 mi | ≈ 2.7 days |
| Dragon | ≈ 206 mi | ≈ 3.4 flying hours |
| Road | — | No road: Dragonstone is an island |

Why this distance shaped the story
In Season 2 Stannis Baratheon sails his fleet from Dragonstone straight into Blackwater Bay for the Battle of the Blackwater. In Season 7 Daenerys makes Dragonstone her base, and Jon Snow sails from White Harbor to meet her there.
In House of the Dragon the same crossing divides Team Black on Dragonstone from Team Green in King’s Landing. Dragons can reach the capital in an afternoon, which is why the war turns into a race for dragonriders. See the Team Black vs Team Green map and the Battle of the Gullet map.
How ThroneAtlas calculates distances
Every location on ThroneAtlas sits on one grid scaled to the 300-mile Wall, the only firm measurement in the books. Road distance adds 15% to the straight line for bends, fords and hills; sea routes add 30% for coastlines and capes.
Speeds are realistic medieval averages: about 40 miles a day for a lone rider, 15 for an army with baggage, 100 for a sailing ship and an estimated 60 miles an hour for a grown dragon. Treat the results as fan estimates for comparing routes, not official figures.
