A castle on a river, pass or causeway controls who can move through the region.

The oldest seats belong to First Men houses such as the Starks; newer ones trace to the Andals and Targaryens.

Fate

Many castles in the story change hands: Winterfell, Harrenhal, Riverrun and Highgarden all fall at least once.
